About us
We’re Ed and Bonnie — a couple in our early seventies who traded a conventional American life for cobblestones, fresh seafood, and a city we’re finally learning to call home. We’ve been based in Valencia, Spain since 2023, and we write about what we find at home, on the road, and in our hearts and minds.
Our Valencia is where you’ll find us living — the markets, the festivals, the neighbors, the rhythms of a Mediterranean city that keeps surprising us. Start here if you’re thinking about visiting, or just curious what daily life here actually looks like.
Elsewhere is where we wander — Spain’s vast interior and beautiful coastline, Europe’s cities and natural beauty, and occasionally somewhere further afield. We travel by train when we can, slowly when possible, and always with an appetite.
Beyond the Map is where we go when a place — or a moment — asks for more than a travel post can hold. Personal essays, reflections on aging, connection, belonging and what it means to build a life somewhere new.
upcoming ADVENTURES
2025 was a rich and busy year — Oman, Sicily, and Rome. Germany, France, and Belgium with our son Mark. Greece, Poland, France, Madeira, Porto, and meaningful time with family in Pennsylvania. We came home to Valencia in February with full hearts and a new sense of clarity about what we want this next chapter to look like.
2026 will be intentionally quieter — and we mean that in the best possible way. We’re rooting down in Valencia this year, exploring Spain more deeply, and letting our adopted city finally become the home it was always meant to be. In the spring, Bonnie is heading to Uzbekistan with friends while Ed explores Istanbul — we’ll reunite there before coming home. In late April, we’re looking forward to showing Valencia, Madrid, and Toledo to visiting family. Summer will bring us back to Pennsylvania for time with our three grandchildren, as it always does.
The rest of the year? Spain. We have a long list and we’re just getting started.
